Child suffers head injury in pedestrian car accident

There are many thousands of pedestrians in New York. Unfortunately, some drivers are not as careful as they should be when there are people walking in the area, potentially resulting in an accident with serious consequences. Unfortunately, pedestrians can suffer significant injuries when involved in an accident with a motor vehicle. In fact, a recent car accident in another state resulted in a head injury for a child.

The accident happened on a day in November. A 48-year-old mother reportedly picked up her 4-year-old son just prior to the accident. As they were crossing the street, police say that they were struck by a vehicle with an elderly driver.

Reports indicate that the two victims were thrown approximately 15 feet into the air; both were rushed to the hospital. The mother was released soon afterward with a concussion, but she has been staying with her son who suffered a traumatic head injury. Though he recently awoke from a coma — earlier than he was expected to — a friend of the family claims that the toddler has a long recovery ahead of him, likely including multiple surgeries. The family is reportedly unsure of his prognosis in the immediate aftermath of the accident.

In the meantime, the child’s self-employed mother has been missing work to stay with her son. The child’s father’s ability to work has also been limited because their other child requires care. Because lost wages and medical expenses can leave families in a precarious financial situation, many victims of a head injury may choose to seek recompense in a civil court. An attorney with experience with such cases can help victims of such accidents in New York, including the parents of a child victim, fully understand their legal options.
