Will an adult stem cell study prove useful for TBI?

Toledo-based ProMedica and California stem-cell company Stemedica Cell Technologies Inc. announced an adult stem cell clinical trial that will run for a year. This study aims to determine whether stem cells can cause regeneration of new cells or preservation of existing cells in adults with traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

The hope is that this may become a new type of treatment for TBI. The study is only the first step towards a potential new method of treatment. If it is successful, it could be a breakthrough for TBI patients.

Why are new treatments for TBI important?

Brain injuries are difficult to diagnose and treat. The delay in diagnosis for many TBI patients makes treatment even more challenging. Sometimes, when a brain injury diagnosis is made too late, the treatment options are limited. A new type of treatment such as the adult stem cell treatment in the study may be critical in improving recovery odds for TBI victims.

Traumatic brain injuries can cause symptoms and side effects that range from mild to severe, including:

  • Confusion and memory loss
  • Mood and personality disorders
  • Sleep disorders
  • Damage to organs and body systems
  • Speech difficulty
  • Loss of motor function

In very severe cases, TBI victims may be in a vegetative state or coma.

Some people with a mild TBI make a full recovery, but some suffer permanent brain damage. People with moderate or severe brain injuries will experience symptoms for life.

If you or a family member suffered a brain injury, you will need compensation to cover your medical expenses and related losses. In many cases, working with an attorney makes it easier to recover the compensation you and your family need.
