7 tips for buying a bicycle helmet

For bicyclists, the best way to protect themselves from suffering a brain injury in an accident is to wear a helmet. This means buying a bike helmet, which may be confusing. Which helmet is the best one, as far as safety and comfort are concerned?

BikeRadar.com provides seven things to keep in mind when picking out a bicycle helmet. Here they are:

  • Protection. The most important consideration. The U.S. government requires bike helmets to meet CPSC standards. Helmets that are made from polystyrene and are in-molded are best.
  • Ventilation. It is easy to get warmed up riding a bike, so most people will want to keep their heads cool despite the helmet. Look for multiple holes or vents and internal venting to let the air in.
  • Fit. To get your helmet size, measure the circumference of your head just above your ears. Try on several different makes and models to find the one that is most comfortable for you.
  • Adjustments. Make sure you can adjust the helmet with a turn wheel or ratchets to maximize the fit.
  • Padding. Good padding makes the helmet comfortable, wicks away sweat, and may prevent odors from developing.
  • Visor. This may be more useful for mountain biking than biking through traffic, but a visor can shade your eyes and keep the rain out.
  • Crash replacement. Many companies offer discounts on replacements, if you get into an accident and damage your helmet within a year or two of purchase.

Of course, even the best helmet on the market cannot stop a bad driver from running into you. When that happens, you may need legal advice to help you get your medical bills and other related expenses paid for.

Very important points here. Wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle is crucial. Your head, and especially your brain, is delicate and needs to be protected.
