Causes and signs of spinal cord injury

A spinal cord injury can change a person's life forever. While some of these injuries can be treated, helping the individuals regain their former level of health, this is not always the case.

Here are some of the signs associated with a spinal cord injury:

-- Difficulty walking

-- Loss of control

-- Inability to move the legs or arms

-- Headache

-- Feelings of tingling

-- Stiffness or pain in the neck

-- Signs of shock

These may be the most common signs of a spinal cord injury, but it does not mean everybody who suffers this type of injury will experience each and every one.

Now that you understand the signs of a spinal cord injury, here are some of the most common causes:

-- Motor vehicle accident, especially trauma to the neck, head, and back region

-- Sports-related head injuries, such as a helmet to helmet collision in football

-- Violent attack, often a stabbing or shooting in the back

-- Falling from a great height

-- Electrical accident

-- Slip and fall accident

These are the most common causes of a spinal cord injury, but other situations can lead to this health concern, as well.

You cannot spend your entire life worried that you are going to injure your spinal cord. However, you should realize that this is something that could happen. There are things you can to do reduce your chance of injury. At the same time, you never know when something bad could happen, such as another vehicle colliding with yours.
